Best Buy Open Box & Clearance, Explained (2026)

Best Buy's cheapest honest prices usually aren't price errors. They're open-box returns and clearance exits — graded, store-specific, and sitting in a cage while the website still shows new-in-box. Learn the grades, check the accessories, and run sold comps before you drive, and this is one of the most reliable electronics veins in retail flipping.

Open-box vs. clearance vs. a price error

Three different things get called “a Best Buy deal.” Mixing them up is how people overpay or get cancelled:

LaneWhat it actually isWill it ship / sell?
Open-boxA returned, display, or handled unit, graded and repriced at that storeYes — it's the current price. Condition is the risk, not cancellation.
ClearanceNew or overstock inventory the store is exiting (often yellow-tagged)Yes, until it's gone. Depth varies by department and week.
Price errorA mistake in the file — wrong decimal, accessory price on a full SKU, bundle glitchMaybe. Retailers cancel errors. See our price-error guide.

Open-box is the everyday Best Buy edge. Price errors are rarer and come with cancel-risk ratings for a reason. If a $499 item rings at $4.99, that's an error. If it's $279 and the tag says Open-Box Excellent, that's the game this page is about.

Condition grades: what the tag is promising

Best Buy grades open-box units so you're not guessing. Names on the tag have shifted over the years (Excellent / Certified / Satisfactory / Fair, plus Geek Squad Certified Refurbished). Trust the current label on the item in your hands, not a blog post from 2019. In practice the ladder still works like this:

Grade you'll seeWhat to expectFlip notes
Geek Squad Certified / Certified RefurbishedInspected; usually a limited Geek Squad warranty; often listed onlineSafest resale story. Costs more. Still run comps — the premium can erase the gap.
Excellent / like-new open-boxLooks new, full accessories claimed, box may be replacedThe default flip grade. Photograph anything off before you leave the parking lot.
Satisfactory / goodVisible wear or a missing minor accessory listed on the tagOnly if comps still work after you disclose the wear. Buyers punish surprise scratches.
Fair / damaged packagingCosmetic issues, missing pieces, or a battered boxUsually a keep-or-parts buy. Rarely worth listing as a clean unit.

The tag is a claim, not a lab report. Power the unit on in the store when you can, match every accessory to the list, and photograph the serial / model before you pay. A missing remote or HDMI cable turns a $50 gap into a $50 problem.

The accessory check is the whole game. Open-box electronics die on missing power supplies, remotes, stands, and “sold as a kit” bits that aren't in the box. If the tag says complete, verify it. If it lists a missing piece, price that piece into your comps or put it back.

How to find open-box without wandering the store

Step by step, from the couch to the receipt:

  1. Set your store in the Best Buy app. Open-box offers are local. A listing with no store selected is showing you a national new-in-box price, not the cage in your city.
  2. Open the product page and look under the new price. Offers labeled Open-Box, Outlet, or Certified Refurbished are the ones that matter. Note the grade, the exact SKU, and how many units that store claims.
  3. Check sold comps before you drive. Same model, same condition story, last 90 days on eBay — sold listings, not asking prices. Subtract ~13% fees and shipping. If it doesn't clear about $15 net or a 40% margin, skip it. That rule of thumb is for a unit with no est. net; a Paydirt est. net already subtracts fees and shipping. Our retail arbitrage guide walks through that math.
  4. In the store, match the tag to the app. Confirm model number, grade, and listed accessories. Ask Geek Squad or the customer-service counter to pull the unit if it isn't on the floor — don't assume the app count is still there.
  5. Power it on and photograph it. Then buy. Keep the receipt. If you're flipping, the receipt plus photos are what you'll need if a buyer claims it arrived dead.

Clearance: the other Best Buy lane

Clearance is new (or new-overstock) stock the store is exiting — last-gen soundbars, discontinued headphones, holiday leftovers, floor-model adjacent SKUs that never got opened. Tags are often yellow. Unlike Walmart hidden clearance, Best Buy usually does print the markdown; the miss is that people only look at the homepage deals carousel and never open a product page with a store selected.

Seasonal windows repeat: late January (post-holiday and fiscal cleanup), July (Prime-adjacent and mid-year resets), and the week after a console or phone launch (last-gen accessories). Treat printed percent-off as a hint and scan the SKU. A 30% tag on a $40 accessory is a keep. A 40% tag on a $400 item with tight comps is the flip.

What sells vs. what to skip

A $220 discount is only a win if the unit is complete and buyers still pay for that model. What tends to move: soundbars and soundbases in Excellent or Certified, name-brand headphones and earbuds with all tips and cases present, external SSDs and USB-C hubs (light to ship), robot vacuums and small appliances that still have recent sold comps, and last-gen console accessories. A $499 soundbar in open-box-excellent at $279 against $380–$420 sold comps leaves roughly $50–$90 after fees if it sells at comps — the same example we use in the best things to flip guide.

Skip: TVs you can't sell locally (freight kills the margin), incomplete camera kits, “fair” laptops buyers will treat as broken, carrier-locked phones, and anything whose sold comps assume “new, sealed.” Disclose the grade in the listing title. Open-box that you list as new is how accounts get restricted.

How Best Buy compares to other stores

Best Buy is the graded-electronics store. Walmart's edge is unadvertised register markdowns — the shelf lies, the scan doesn't. Target prints its ladder on the tag (a price ending in 4 is final) — see the Target clearance guide. Home Depot and Dollar General are penny-item systems, not open-box cages. The common thread is the same one as every other guide on this site: the sticker is a rumor. The system price — and, at Best Buy, the condition grade — is the truth.

Get the cards, not the cage walk

Paydirt's Best Buy monitor watches for price drops and Geek Squad refurb listings around the clock, alongside Walmart, Target and Newegg, and open-box finds members and deal boards surface get relayed too. Opt into Best Buy and you'll get a card with the price math and a cancel-risk rating when a find posts — instead of refreshing product pages by hand. The live board shows yesterday's cards for free.

Price histories

A sale tag doesn't tell you whether a price is actually low. Paydirt publishes the prices its own monitors recorded — the lowest confirmed price, the usual price and whether today's is near its low: Best Buy price history · Laptops · Headphones & audio · TVs · every price history.

Frequently asked questions

What does open-box mean at Best Buy?

Open-box is a returned, display, or otherwise previously handled item that Best Buy resells cheaper than new. The box may be opened or replaced, accessories should be listed on the tag, and the unit is sold as-is for that store's current grade. It is not a price error — it's an intentional, current price.

What's the difference between open-box and Geek Squad Certified?

Open-box is whatever that store took back, graded, and put back on the floor. Geek Squad Certified Refurbished (sometimes labeled Certified Refurbished) is a separate program: the unit is inspected, often comes with a limited Geek Squad warranty, and is usually sold online as well as in store. Certified costs more than a raw open-box and is the safer flip when the dollar gap still works.

How do I find Best Buy open-box items?

In the Best Buy app or on bestbuy.com, open a product page, pick your store, and look for an Open-Box or Outlet offer under the new-in-box price. In the store, check the open-box cages, endcaps, and the Geek Squad / customer-service counter. The shelf tag is a hint; the product page for your selected store is the price you'll actually pay.

Are Best Buy open-box prices the same at every store?

No. Open-box inventory is store-specific. A $279 open-box soundbar at one location can be $349 — or gone — ten miles away. Always set the store in the app before you drive, and verify the SKU and condition grade on the physical tag before you buy.

Can I return a Best Buy open-box item?

Usually yes, but the window and restocking rules are stricter than new-in-box and they change. Check the current return policy in the app for that SKU before you pay — some open-box and outlet items are final sale or carry a restocking fee. Don't build a flip on a return you haven't confirmed.

Is Best Buy open-box worth flipping?

Yes when the grade is honest, the accessories are complete, and sold comps still clear roughly $15 net or a 40% margin after fees and shipping. Skip incomplete kits, 'fair' condition on anything buyers expect to be flawless, and bulky TVs unless you can sell them locally. See our guide to the best things to flip for category math.

What do Best Buy clearance tags mean?

Clearance is a separate lane from open-box: new (or new-overstock) inventory the store is exiting, often yellow-tagged. Depth varies by department and season. Treat the printed percent-off as a starting point and scan the SKU in the app — the system price is what rings.

Will Best Buy price-match open-box?

Open-box and outlet prices are typically excluded from standard price-match. Don't count on a match to a competitor's new-in-box price, and don't argue it on the floor. If the scanned price works on its own comps, buy it; if it only works after a hypothetical match, walk away.
