Amazon, Target and Walmart all run big sales the first full week of October. Some of the "deals" cost the same or less a few weeks earlier. We check non-Amazon deals against up to 90 days of our own price history and say which drops are real.

October's sales are over. Next up: Black Friday (Nov 27) and Cyber Monday (Nov 30).Times from the retailers' announcements. Check their apps for changes.

Why so many sale "deals" aren't real

A big red percentage doesn't tell you much. It's usually measured against a list price that the item rarely sells for. Common tricks:

  • Inflated reference prices. The crossed-out price is a list price the item hasn't sold at in months, so the % off looks bigger than the actual saving.
  • Raise it, then cut it. The price goes up in the weeks before the sale, then comes back down to where it was and gets a sale badge.
  • Last month's price with a new badge. The "sale" price matches, or beats, what the item already cost in September.
  • Look-alike models. A sale-only model number with fewer features can't be compared with anything, so there's no price history to check it against.

How Paydirt tells real from fake

Our monitors log the lowest price they see each day for over 10,000 products at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Newegg and other retailers, and keep up to 90 days of that history. The log started in September, so by the sale most items have a few weeks of it. During an event window, each non-Amazon deal card in our Discord gets one verdict line comparing today's price with that history:

Verdict on the cardThe rule
📉 Lowest we've tracked in 30 daysThe price is at least 2% below the lowest daily price we logged in the 30 days before today.
➖ Matches our 30-day lowWithin 2% of that 30-day low. A fair price, but not a new low.
↘️ Below its usual price, not the lowestBelow the item's 90-day median, but above a lower price we logged in the last 30 days.
⚠️ Not a real dropAbove its 30-day low and not at least 2% below the item's 90-day median daily price, so the sale price isn't below what it usually costs.
⏳ Not enough history yetWe've logged the item on fewer than 7 days. The card says so instead of guessing.

Today's own price never counts toward the history it's compared with, so a deal can't confirm itself. The 90-day median is the price the item usually sits at, and one short dip doesn't move it.

Fake-deal watch. Every day during the sale, our Discord's #general channel gets a list of "sale" items whose price isn't below their own 90-day median. It only includes retail items with at least 14 days of history. Those are the ones to skip, or at least compare somewhere else first.

Amazon deals: we don't publish Amazon prices or Amazon price history anywhere except Amazon's own pages (Amazon Associates rules). Amazon cards list the deal with no numeric verdict. Check the price on the Amazon product page, plus a price-history tool you trust, before you buy.

A 60-second real-deal check you can do yourself

  1. Ignore the crossed-out price. Compare with what the item has actually sold for recently.
  2. Look at its price history. Is today below the usual price, and below the recent low?
  3. Search the exact model number at one or two other retailers. Walmart and Target run sales the same week.
  4. Check who the seller is. A marketplace seller's "deal" isn't the retailer's.
  5. Check the total at checkout, including tax, shipping and whether the coupon actually applied. Prices change during these events, sometimes several times a day.

Strike is Paydirt's top alert tier: a price error 80% or more off that more than one signal backs up, or a real discount on an item whose checked eBay sold prices leave about $150 or more est. net. It is the only tier that alerts the whole server, so a week can have none.

Verified drops so far

Walmart, Best Buy, Newegg and Lenovo products, measured against their own prices from before Walmart Deal Days (the longest of the sales). No Amazon prices (Amazon Associates rules), and no Target this week: we don't have fresh Target prices.

37 of 2,227 products we track at Walmart, Best Buy, Newegg and Lenovo are still at least 5% under their lowest price of the 2 weeks before the sale (as of Oct 14, 2026, published a day late).

The first price is the lowest our monitors recorded for the product from Sep 21 to Oct 4, 2026, before the sale; the second is its price at our last check, which had held for at least a day by then. Every price is one we recorded ourselves, not a retailer's “was” price. Prices move and stock runs out, so check the final price at checkout. Every recent price drop · every price history

Check a price history before you buy

A sale badge doesn't tell you whether the price is actually low. Our price histories show what our own monitors recorded for each product — the lowest confirmed price, the median and whether today's price is near its low. By store: Walmart · Newegg · Lenovo · Best Buy · PC game stores · Staples · Target · Dell · HP · Office Depot.

Frequently asked questions

Are Prime Big Deal Days deals real?

Some are and some aren't. Plenty of Prime Big Deal Days discounts are real, but a strike-through "list price" doesn't show what an item actually sold for last month, and some items cost the same or less a few weeks before the sale. The only reliable test is price history: is today's price below what the item usually costs, and below its recent low? Check the price on Amazon's own product page at checkout. Paydirt doesn't publish Amazon prices or Amazon price history.

When is Prime Big Deal Days 2026?

Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days runs Tuesday, October 6 through Wednesday, October 7, 2026. It starts at 12:01 a.m. PT on October 6 (3:01 a.m. ET) and ends at 11:59 p.m. PT on October 7. It's for Prime members only, and Amazon says new deals drop throughout both days.

Do Target and Walmart compete?

Yes. Target Circle Deal Days (the event formerly called Target Circle Week) runs October 6–7, 2026, for Target Circle members (free to join) and paid Circle 360 members; Target hasn't published a start time. Walmart Deal Days runs October 5–11, 2026, starts at 12 a.m. ET on October 5, and doesn't require a membership. Best Buy hadn't announced an October event as of September 25.

How does Paydirt check if a deal is real?

Our monitors log the lowest price they see each day for over 10,000 products at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Newegg and other retailers, and keep up to 90 days of that history (the log started in September, so most items have a few weeks of it by the sale). During the sale, each non-Amazon deal card compares today's price with the item's 30-day low and 90-day median, then says one of four things: lowest we've tracked, matches our low, below its usual price but not the lowest, or not a real drop. If we have fewer than 7 days of history, the card says so. Once a day we also post a Fake-deal watch in our Discord, listing "sale" items with at least 14 days of history that aren't below their 90-day median. Amazon cards don't get a numeric verdict because Amazon's Associates rules don't allow it. Whatever the verdict, check the final price at checkout.

Sale dates and times come from Amazon, Target and Walmart announcements and launch coverage as of October 2, 2026. Retailers can change them. A verdict describes our own price records for that item, not a guarantee of the price you'll pay. Prices and availability change constantly, so always check the final price at checkout.
